What is a Direct Drive Motor?
A Direct Drive Motor, is a type of permanent-magnet synchronous motor which directly drives the load. As a result, the use of a transmission or gearbox is eliminated. Therefore, the amount of moving parts in the system is reduced tremendously increasing the efficiency and creating a quiet and highly dynamic operation. Consequently, the direct drive mechanism creates a very high lifetime. Examples are a torque motor, linear motor and BLDC motor.
In addition, geared motors have a lower torque to inertia ratio. This means that a high torque is required to accelerate the motor. For direct drive torque motors inertia is low, which makes the motors very suitable for high speed, acceleration applications with fast starts and stops.
Furthermore, a Direct Drive Motor can also be supplied as a frameless motor. “Frameless” refers to a motor without a frame, housing, bearing or feedback system. As a result, system suppliers are capable of integrating their motor into the application and therefore eliminating the need for additional interfacing and as such reducing the cost of ownership.
Above all, a Direct Drive Motor can be used for various applications, such as applications where a high positioning accuracy is needed. Moreover, these frameless motors are used for situations where small size, low weight, minimum power and optimal speed control is desired.
